A Walk Down Denver’s Reefer Row
Ex-Velocity Girl drummer Jim Spellman reports on Denver’s medicinal herb scene…
Jim Spellman, the drummer of Velocity Girl and writer of a lot of their best songs (My Forgotten Favorite, Audrey’s Eyes, etc) is now a journalist for CNN.
Here’s his story on homeless kids in Denver that identify themselves as juggalos.
Watch the videos, they’re recommended even if you’re not from Colorado or a fan of Velocity Girl.
“My Forgotten Favorite” - Velocity Girl
Just got my hands on some unreleased Velocity Girl demos (thanks, J), so I thought I’d re-blog their biggest hit. I don’t think a better pop song has ever been written.
Some Japanese band covering “Audrey’s Eyes” and “My Forgotten Favorite” by Velocity Girl
Jim Spellman & Sarah Shannon - “Sleep With Your Friends”
This is an acoustic demo from Jim Spellman and Sarah Shannon, both ex-Velocity Girl. I could tell you how I acquired it, but then I’d have to shoot you (actually Jim sent me a CD of demos and rare VG-related shit).
This tune eventually morphed into a track titled “#1 Song” by Jim’s next band, Julie Ocean, a criminally underrated and overlooked indie pop band with a bunch of DC indie vets (ie The Saturday People, Glo-worm, Velocity Girl, etc)
Primal Scream - “Velocity Girl”
I still think Bobby Gillespie and company were way cooler in the band’s early days. This song is so great, it makes me wish that I hadn’t heard their other material which is 80% crap.
